When I grow up…
By Beth Augustine in bthestory
“When I grow up I want to write code for software!”
Said…No Kid Ever…at least, not yet.
Kids today want to be Rockstars, Doctors, Lawyers, Athletes, Actors, Social Media Influencers and YouTube Stars. In other words, they want to be something high profile or, as they would put it, something “cool.” Well, Moms and Dads, coding is cool (and a reliable future source of high-paying employment in a world full of uncertainty). We just need to help our kids see it in a different way.
This video from Code.org does a great job of furthering the mission. A young person should be able to watch this video and walk away thinking that this is a legit career option. Maybe say to a friend, “Dude, I’m gonna be a sick coder.” And, a parent might think, “Why is my child not learning this yet and how do I get them started?” In other words, it conveys the message well and motivates the viewer to do something. It’s simply a good story, nothing too fancy – just the tried and true interview and B-roll style. Although, it doesn’t hurt that it features a few actual rockstars of the coding universe.
Code.org has been producing and sharing digital stories since their beginnings in 2013. And this video was their very first. It stands the test of time and is still their most widely viewed story, approaching 14 million views.
How’s that for a return on investment?
